A view lets you filter items and people on the Search page and in the Tagging Engine Items and Tagging Engine People portlets.
In general, you use your My Tags and Favorites & Contacts views to "recover" items and people, and you use the other types of views to "discover" items and people.

You must have the View My Tags capability to have a My Tags view. The tag lists in your My Tags view contain tags that you have applied to items and people. Note, however, that these tags may have also been applied to items and people by users other than yourself.
You can use your My Tags view to:
Create "bookmarks"
for items that you access on both your work and home computers.
To do this, apply tags to the items, then access your My Tags view
from each computer.
Maintain a changing
record of items that are important to you.
To do this, apply tags to and remove tags from the items, as desired.
Access your My Tags view to see the items that you have tagged.
You must have the View Everyone's Tags capability to have an Everyone's Tags view. The tag lists in your Everyone's Tags view contains tags that anyone has applied to items and people.
You can use your Everyone's Tags view to:
Browse documents that have been submitted by your peers.
Gain an understanding of the concepts that are popular with users of your portal.
You must have the Add Favorites and Contacts capability to have a Favorites & Contacts view. Your Favorites & Contacts view lets you browse only items and people that you have added to your Favorites and Contacts lists, respectively. No other user can access your Favorites and Contacts lists. (In the Tagging Engine Items and Tagging Engine People portlets, the Favorites & Contacts view is divided into My Favorites and My Contacts views.)
You can use your Favorites & Contacts view to:
Store an item without having to search for it again.
Create a personal library of information that no other user can change.
Organize and retrieve
contact information for the people that you interact with regularly.
You can click a person's name to view their contact information. Add
a person to your Contacts list to quickly access their contact information.
Find a subject matter
expert.
To find a subject matter expert on the Search page, create a search
query describing the characteristics of the subject that you want to learn
more about. After the search results appear, click the People tab. The
people who have the most expertise on that subject appear at the top of
the search results.
To add
an item to your Favorites & Contacts view, find the desired item in
your search results and click Add
to Favorites
on the
row of that item. To add an item to your Favorites
& Contacts view, find the desired item in your search results and
click Add
on
the row of that item. On the Search page, access your favorites
by choosing Favorites & Contacts
from the View drop-down list, then clicking the Items
tab. (To view all of your
favorites, choose the Favorites &
Contacts view, then perform a search with a blank search query.)

in your search results and click Add
to Contacts on the row of that person.

You must have the Create Views capability to create a Custom View. Custom views are views that you can create that are windows into the My Tags views of one or more other people (members). When you use a Custom View, you can easily discover the documents and people that have been tagged by those members.
You can use Custom Views to:
Have easy access to the constantly-changing set of documents that are used by your coworkers.
Gain an understanding of the concepts that are popular with your manager.

You must have the Create Views capability to create a view, and the Prescribe Views capability to prescribe a view. Prescribed views are Custom views that you assign to one or more people (subscribers).
You can create Prescribed views to:
Provide the manager of a different department with easy access to the documents that are being used by your direct reports.
Provide your employees with a list of people whom you determine to be subject matter experts.
Provide views to people outside of your organization who do not have the ability to create their own views or have a My Tags view.
